My name is Ben Canney, and my wife Sarah, my son James (5) and I are super excited to be a part of the Camp Tulakadik family! I grew up in a small town called Durham Bridge just outside Fredericton and my wife grew up in little place called Maple Ridge, NB. We both grew up going to different summer camps and met at a family camp called Beulah when we were in the 9th grade. We started dating in high school and after graduating, attended the same university where I pursued a ministry degree and Sarah studied education. We were married in the summer of 2003 and moved to Perth Andover where I became the Assistant Pastor at Perth Andover Wesleyan Church and Sarah eventually taught in the local elementary school. I had the honor of being ordained in 2005 while I was pastoring there. After five years of ministry there, we felt God leading us to Sussex, where I worked at a local university in the enrollment department and my wife eventually started teaching for the Anglophone South District in various capacities. She recently graduated with a Master of Education in Resource Education from Crandall University and is currently working as a resource teacher at Sussex Elementary School.
Sarah is a people person and loves spending time with family and friends, being a mom, enjoying the outdoors and reading a good book. I’m a person that likes to live life to the fullest, not allowing fleeting ideas to sit on the shelf for long, which has led me to such adventures as skydiving, rock climbing, building an ice castle, and most recently, building a wooden forge and teaching myself how to blacksmith.
Our son James is very special to us and has a unique story of his own. Spend time with us at camp and you’ll be sure to catch a glimpse of what God has done in our lives through our little guy. James is in kindergarten and loves to sing at the top of his lungs in the comfort of his own home, use his imagination, go exploring in the woods, and create things. He is definitely a thinker and is not afraid to ask you tough questions. We are glad he will be able to be with Christian kids and teens as they develop in their spiritual and leadership lives. James loves the camp life and we believe that the environment it provides will further develop his character.
While living in Sussex, I had a couple of opportunities to help out at Caton’s Island Camp. It was through this experience that I came to love camping ministry and ended up being hired as the Assistant Director. I served there for three years and my wife and I enjoyed investing in the lives of those who came to the island during our summers there. We were able to join the Camp Tulakadik family in January of this year and we are excited to enjoy life at the camp during the summer months and see what God will do in the lives of those who step foot on the camp grounds in the years to come.
Camp has a special place in my heart. It was at a kid’s camp where I accepted Christ into my heart. It was at a family camp where I met my future wife-to-be. It was at an island camp where God gave me a passion for camping ministry. I look forward to all that God is going to do at Camp Tulakadik!! He continually uses camp to change peoples live in countless ways. I also look forward to coming alongside the people that serve at the camp and hear their heart as they share about how God has changed their lives.
Tony ReickerDirector of Operations
Hi, I’m Tony – I serve in the office at Camp T and oversee a number of administrative & operational details at camp. As a child, I attended camp briefly and went on to spend a number of summers at camp during my teenage years and early twenties.
Since my final year as a summer staff in 2002, I have had the opportunity to complete a degree in Communication Studies, serve as youth pastor and lead pastor in two Association churches (Saint John-Kings) and start a family with my wife, Meredith (whom I met at Camp T), and our three boys.
From my early days of camp, one of my life verses has always been 1 Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity” and although I’m not considered young any more, I continue to strive to set an example in each of these areas and am thankful for God’s grace and the grace of others when I fall short.
A few of my interests/life goals include coaching/mentoring others, helping organizations build stronger foundations and encouraging others to look beyond themselves and invest in those around them.
I look forward to meeting you and helping make your camp experience great.
